Hi, I'm new here! Pretty good so far. I have a thought, however: couldn't they see city lights coming from the dark side of Earth?

I'm not really sure they wouldn't be blown out by the Sun's reflected light, considering the sensitivity their telescope would need to survey the planet all the way from the outskirts of the system.

That is true. And they apparently missed a bunch of other critical details. I did notice they mentioned the lights later in the story.

Obviously they're space Australians.

"This system has eight planets..", not "have". Also (minor), "...we detected a weak hephrene signature..." or "...we detected weak hephrene signatures..."

And I *love* Earth being "upside-down" in their display. They had a 50-50 chance of their orientation being the same as ours. It simply wasn't this time. :-)

Yay, somebody noticed! XD

TRIVIA
The Alliance space stretches for an impressive 16 thousand light years along the longest axis and contains approximately 12 billion star systems. Despite that, 99.99% of those star systems haven't been explored even by an automatic mapping drone yet, and the borders of the Alliance space are defined mostly by the reach of spaceships from the nearest colony or space station, and in general are purely informative.
