This was doomed from the start, i understand gharr wanted to get back to his people, but he should've approached the base alone. But now.......well chances are all of his human friends will be arrested or killed in order to keep the aliens a secret from other countries and while gharr will heavily protest against this, chances are the government will lie to him and say that they'll be released when in reality they'll either be in a prison cell or in a body bags. Because like all governments, the u.s. sees this as an opportunity to benefit itself over other countries, and they're not above making a few citizens disappear in order to do it. This is why aliens don't (and honestly shouldn't) visit us.

a) This is actually not the USA.

b) "Other countries" have already been informed as per page 109 ff..

Killing them would be pointless.

Nah.

First, they complied as good boys and brought the alien there and they teach him the local language. They didn't really hinder their government efforts.

Second, even if other countries higher ups didn't know about aliens already (As the other comment said) there is no risk of letting them walk away. No one sort of other moronic conspiranoics will believe some cuckoos who claim having meet alien life. BUT people will get suspicious if they disappear after going to a government's base.

Third, if the knowledge of aliens is made public eventually killing them will be pointless.

My guess is they will let them go and keep their online activity monitorized.

Am I the first to commont on Gharr having all four hands up?

Avatar

Yes ... but frankly, I don't see any guard anywhere in the galaxy who'd be content with anything less than "ALL of them! Yes, the one you're hiding in your watch pocket, too!"

On a sidenote, I think Gharr is either following order or just mimic his human friends :

For a species with claws (blunt , I know) raising the hands up would maybe not be considered a submissive gesture since they can rake downwards unlike humans.

We prefer to punch...

With a different physiology some mannerism will also be different..

In this case Gharr is playing it safe . Smart...

What's a parade without a marching band? (Maybe the guards are all humming the tune?)

OK, I suggest : "Dance of the cuckoos"

In an action movie, the four soldiers would now have left the gate area unguarded, a concealed compartment would open in the car and $HERO would walk into the high-security site completely unhindered.

(In real life, the fifth soldier behind the one-way-mirror windows hangs up the phone he used to report to the brass in real-time, and the security center in the facility keeps several cameras pointed at the area, just in case someone got the bright idea of sneaking up on #5 from behind the car.)

I mean, that's one way to do it... surly not what they were hoping would happen.

This was a funny page! Gharr was in the back seat, trying to look all cool, but Dan was still full of "throw him on the ground" energy, and Val probably got cuffed after she protested them doing that. As usual, Mark was relatively calm and cool, and Gharr, thinking he has nothing to worry about, was also cool enough not to be cuffed. I hope the walk from the gate to the main compound isn't very far.

I hope the walk from the gate to the main compound isn't very far.

It isn't, but with Gharr tagging along, I suspect it'll turn enough heads to make for a(n im)proper perp walk ...

I hope the walk from the gate to the main compound isn't very far.

Just 300 or 400 meters, not that far.

Technically that suit is probably bullet proof and light cannon resistant (because micrometeors exist) so technically he has a lot less to worry about.

Avatar

You're mixing up EVA and IVA suits. Gharr, and everybody else from the ship, are downed in IVA (or "environmental") suits. They aren't designed to withstand a true space environment, only to ensure you won't suffocate, basically.

Why did only the 2 in the front get handcuffs? (Of did only have 2 handcuffs?)

Avatar

They never expected that more than two people could be arriving at the gate, or that some of them having more than two arms.

Panel 3 to 4.....I laughed until my sides leaked.

Ofcourse being professional , they immediately spotted the troublemaker and threw Dan on the ground...

On the positive side, no-one got shot.

So things are actually looking good!

Avatar

> I laughed until my sides leaked.

... you might want to see a doctor about that.

> they immediately spotted the troublemaker and threw Dan on the ground...

... and also cuffed Val. My "strangling with bare hands" prediction still stands, if delayed!

In the last panel, Dan walks as if his handcuffs came with a third "arm" to automate Atomic Wedgies ...

Avatar

It was the sides or the seat.

Maybe Val can strangle Dan with her strong strong, firm legs !

Also Dan went straight from red to brown alert, thus the weird walk.

I cannot wait for the Majors phone to ring. He is going to end up on sick leave before this is over ! I wonder what the official report will look like....

Content of White Fjord : 3 civilians. 2 males & one angry female. 1 alien , sex unknown.

1 pizza box, empty. They had a "Meat lovers" with pineapple.

Are the 230 & 231 comments supposed to be the same?

Avatar

I guess that yes, but in order to make sense of the older part of the comment section later on, let me PSA that page 230 - the left half of the double spread - was posted solo a week before 231 = right half.

My autistic brain noticed the "231" in the page title and the same comments as 230 before it noticed the rest of the comic page.

They're real lucky they didn't get pulled over for that. Imagine deciding to turn yourself in to Those In The Know, only to have to explain yourself to some random cop instead...

Avatar

At the very least, the poor guard will need to call someone of a higher authority. They're driving in a white truck (But they could still be waving white flags!)

Avatar
Senior
JoB

IIRC there's like half a mile or more of open landscape+road leading up to the site. I expect the guards to already have informed someone of the "white car, like we're searching for" and that some vehicle will inconspicuously roll in place to block the other end of the access road as we sp^H^Hread.

Oh God or whatever Deity watches over these part of the planet!

I cannot however spot Gharr. He better not "spring" up like Jack-in-the-box or that guard

will flinch. Especially his trigger finger......

Avatar
Senior
glenn

Maybe they're at the gate as a distraction while Gharr waits in the bushes to see how it goes, and when the Captain of the Guard shows up he'll walk up and say, "Hello there. Could you help me please?"

Avatar
Senior

Right....."Hello can Y..."RATATATATATATATATATATATATATA!!! (reloading sounds) "RATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATA"

Avatar

Oh ye of little faith... Someone of rank would surely know what that base is for and possibly even their current guests, and "what happened" before THEY showed up. Also probably really tired of this low-level service and eager to get the attention of those who can reward and promote a soldier with such Personal Incentive as to save them all from such an embarrassing situation!!!

Is Gharr... the driver?!

Avatar
Senior
JoB

I hope not.

Dan's riding shotgun, Mark is behind him, the rest of the rear seems empty. It makes more sense for Gharr to have laid flat on the bench (to remain unseen, en lieu of the blanket approach) than for Val.

Avatar

No that's Val riding shotgun. Mark must be driving, and there's no sign of Gharr, neither in the payload nor in the seat next to Val. My guess is they dropped him off around the bend a little ways back, or maybe even left him back at Mark's house, to avoid putting him in unnecessary danger if things go sideways. They can open the conversation with something like, "we have some important information about the 'meteor' that crashed here. Can we talk to an officer?"

Avatar
Regular
Wilson

Sorry I mean Dan must be driving with Mark in the back seat behind Val. No sign of the guy whose head was squished into the ceiling the last time he went for a ride in that Fjord.

Avatar
Senior
JoB

The driver will be the first guy that guard talks to, I don't see the other two letting Dan take that position. Or, with Val by his side, I'd expect a "strangling with bare hands" scene coming up if they did!

What did Dan do to be th only one pinned to the ground?

Avatar

Whoops, I didn't meant to post previous comment as an answer

As for the non existant plates, Dan is a conspiranoic, so who knows

Avatar
Senior
JoB

Maybe "driving an illegal vehicle" is sufficient for an all-out arrest, even by non-police?

[imagines what paranoia would do to that person's car, once it causes suspicion]

* rip out radio, GPS, emergency call

* replace the entire engine with one that doesn't need an electronic management (I guess that means to go diesel, too ...)

* remove pre-installed bombs airbags

* install "stealth mode" switch to kill all lights, including door, dashboard, reversing and brake lights

* apply foil to give tinted/mirroring windows, including those not legally allowed to be nontransparent

* defeat seat sensors (meant to enable airbags if seat is occupied) "for privacy"

* ...

TRIVIA
Many homeworlds of the respective species are still divided into countries, but freshly established colonies on other planets are almost always monolithic and basically independent, since they sprawled from a single initial outpost, and time lag involved due to interstellar distances making remote management of the colony from a homeworld to be ineffective and frustrating at best.
