Latest blog post: How the comic is made (2025-12-26)

Author's comment:

Typically, for long EVA activities lasting for more than an hour, a special addon to a spacesuit is used, which includes a backpack with additional oxygen supply and maneuvering thrusters, and coverings that provide better radiation protection and cooling systems.

Dawn is large enough that to travel the outer hull effectively, a network of travel rails is used with a combination of motorized pulleys that allows reaching any desired hull sector from the nearest airlock within several minutes.

It's nice and explain why Hekaht, but what do you except for him, Quantum?

Also, why didn't you ask Zane for permission to involved him? Because the last time someone schemed behind his back, it didn't end well for him. Okay, they have done some things, but it was still very much a case of "better to ask for forgiveness than permission", so they can still land on their foot if their are honest and transparent about it. But here, they have crossed a much more serious line.

[Quantum], why didn't you ask Zane for permission to involve [Hekaht]?

I take the "physically isolated from the rest of the ship's systems" part as implying that Zane intended to specifically keep Quantum out of the loop. For wannabe snoops like Hekaht, the safeguards restricting info within those systems seem sufficient.

Unlikely. Quantum is one of the very few who know about the Ghosts, so why would Zane turn his back on them now? Especially on someone who seems to be his second-in-command?

Even if Quantum didn't have access to the live feed for security reasons, I'm sure they would have a copy of the data afterward, or whatever some kind of report. Despite they possible impatience and frustration, they seems reasonable enough not to justify such a reckless action.

No, I think Quantum except something specific from Hekaht, probably just a fresh eye on the all situation.

Else, the page next after the one you pick up seem imply that Quantum deliberately left open the data access, and so that Hekaht involvement had been planned from a long time.

Not specifically Quantum, but I've tried to imply in some previous pages that there might be other snoops out there, so to secure against the possibility of that, Zane decided to create an airgapped subsystem.

So does Quantum see Hekaht as a friend here or as an expendable, yet competent, meat-suit who can interface with the potentially dangerous signal without much risk to the rest of Dawn?

And are these exterior rails available for entertainment purposes? Or perhaps for keelhauling?

I like that Quantum is on Hekahts helmet hud, I'd think it'd use the three little projector drones.

Are you trying to get someone to "forget" a maintenance clamp on the rail?

I'd think it'd use the three little projector drones.

The ones maneuvering with propellers and, thus, the ship's atmosphere ... ?

I thought those were little thrusters...

Also, I like how Hekahts boots have an on/off indicator for the magboots.

So..where to start...It seems obvious now that Quantum has no access to confidential info except what Zane choose to divulge. When the Military gets involved the door is shut (see page 199). They will not let him have access to their systems. Quantum would be an asset but for some reason the Mil. consider him a possible liability or even foreign agent.

Maybe because they cannot really understand the tech going on inside his "Barrel of Fun" (page 198) and thus have no way of truly judging his character.

Also , right here any Intelligence officer would think he is manipulating Hekath ("very special friend" bit, building/maintaining a personal relationship) But it still could quite be true.

If they get busted and Quantum fess up to using Hekaht ; True friendship.

But if only Hekaht gets his tail in hot water , we will know.

And the 3 stooges will have to expand the house or maybe get XXLong

bunk-beds. It will slowly turn into "Hotel Raharr"

Or maybe just that the military does not wanted to grant access to their network to a civilian, which Quantum is despite they high rank in the expeditionary fleet. The same page explain that the expedition and the military are two separated chain of command, so probably two separated chain of permision too.

Also, give to Quantum acces to live feed probably imply to open it for the all ship. Permision is good, but nothing is better than a physical isolation if we can do it. Maybe that even Quantum agreed with that on the paper, but they was already planning to involve Hekaht for other reasons.

Yes point taken . But Zane invited the Azninari to the "op center" at the faint objection (panel 5 previous page) from the military , not Quantum.

OK the Azinari entity represents all the Azinari..Quantum, well I think there is only the one of him ?

I am starting to think Quantum is Zane´s personal undercover agent. To get the info or confirmation Zane may otherwise not get or be in doubt about.

Hmm...

Yes! I'll call it the "ready-to-kick-your-behind warning light"!

I'd wish that there were a more solid connection than "grab your broom and try not to let go during the ride", though. There's a reason we use security lines that can catch our "fall" even as our hands get torn right off whatever handle ...

Maybe it's harder to notice than I've hoped, but Hekaht is attached to the pulley with a cable, not holding onto a handle.

Aah, I see now ... it's not a broomstick (cf. slight "bend" in panel 5) but a line connected to his belt (panel 4).

The pulley braking hard would still promise to have him shed his momentum by helmet-to-hull impact, though ...

Took me a second viewing to notice it but I did see him hooking up the pully and then travelling on it.

Also noticed the "magnetic" boots showing red, then blue when he was connecting the pully tether. Nice detail.

TRIVIA
Insectoids in a lot of ways are the weird ones among the Alliance members. Besides having a completely unpronounceable name of the species, they have dextero amino acid biochemistry, which makes their food and biosphere to be inedible by the rest of the Alliance, and vice versa.
