should be lite the surrounding forest. lit is past tense, I lit the candle. Light refers to a light source like sunlight, incandescent light etc. English can be a pain for a lot of people who are raised with it. so you guys are doing a great job.

Wrong, "light" is the correct verb for igniting something. "Lite" is only an adjective, and only for describing products that are low in something.
