Author's comment:

The excitement of having an actual alien wears off surprisingly quickly, once you realize they're trying their damn best to mimic a piece of rock.

Under the circumstances, it might be better to be more responsive in order to steer first contact toward a desired direction.

I see she's been moved to a bigger cell.

Really seems like they should have professional interrogators as part of the process here, tightly controlling their manner and poise, and as close to unflappable as possible. They are dealing with aliens, and this is not a space for unprofessionalism like what this dumbass just displayed. More frustration is gonna happen until that demeanor cracks, or some translates the boot commands in the VM copies of the alien's computers.

Really not sure what he's unhappy with though. Logically, the longer this (presumably) military approach doesn't work, the more likely a scientist like him gets to try something a little more experimental. And fun.

Seems like human vision isn't based on movement.

Humans are not used to stillness. (At least, most ones I know of.)

I tried an experiment once. I decided to see how long I could stare at a brook. (It was at a meditation retreat; such ideas occur.) After a couple of minutes my field of vision was moving like the water. I had to stand up and close my eyes to shake it off ...

TRIVIA
Many homeworlds of the respective species are still divided into countries, but freshly established colonies on other planets are almost always monolithic and basically independent, since they sprawled from a single initial outpost, and time lag involved due to interstellar distances making remote management of the colony from a homeworld to be ineffective and frustrating at best.
