It has been an emotional roller-coaster, but I'm not sure I understand what they risked.
Ahshu was very vocal and aggressive about her call for breaking the protocols and rescuing Gharr, despite the risks, to the point Zane excluded her from meetings on the subject.
Then they used Quantum's connection to Earth on a technicality tha it didn't need to report how they were being used.
BUT, the biggest risk they took was directly contacting Earth which completely violates the contact protocols despite nobody really believing them.
https://leavingthecradle.com/comic/133
I was thinking about that myself, it seemed pretty benign and small but now it looks like at massive transgression of protocol.
However Gharr shall has his wish fulfilled. He will be very very famous.
Not on the right planet maybe, but still : Life-Goal achieved
Do not forget "going nosey in the classified files they don't have access to."
I wasn't sure that would count as something they risked to get Gharr off the planet.
Zane was already on Earth making contact and negotiating the return of all crew that he could when Hekaht discovered the Ghosts and even Ahshu noted it wasn't necessary to hack Zane's commander's console for more details.
But she did note that they could work something out together when Gharr got back... and I guess he's back now.
Seeing, in panel three, that there's enough room between the bench and the railing for Hekaht to freely walk there, I wonder why Gharr keeps his tail bent to flop off in front of him instead. The "tail-free" backrests we've seen in standard seats strongly suggest that the average Raharr prefers to keep it straight ... that wouldn't happen to be a long-term consequence of his superhero(not) landing, would it?
I think it's due to his current emotional state, that or he's used to seating for human physiology.
Spending several months becoming accustomed to tucking his tail around and developing it as a habit makes sense.
Especially dealing with your standard issue human doors ... and the general human behavior, who are not accustomed to you having a large tail, while also a being a human-like biped ...
Considering the automated, powered, airtight, guillotine-sque, probably one-sided-vacuum-rated doors aboard their ships, I'd like to register minor doubts WRT that theory.
(Gharr seemed equally unconcerned about one of those closing directly behind his back on page 11.)
Well duhh, they made those tail-clipping free like millenia ago. It's nothing more complicated, than adding a little bit more sensors to detect obstructions at tail level, than we have today on Earth for your average lift door, or mass transit vehicle's doors. I mean we had those for like 30 years if not longer ...
Plus of course, it's probably a learned habit of when crossing the door, move tail automatocally to the side. Something Zane shows here: https://leavingthecradle.com/comic/156
Or it might be part of expected good behaviour/etiquette/whatever.
Please define "tail level" in a zero-g environment ... >:->
Those just need more sensors, or the types that cover the whole height of the opening. That's already a thing over here on planet Earth.
Plus a bit of training for the microgravity 101 about how to handle you tail around doors and airlocks.
A bit of everything, but also when in distress, one's natural instinct is to wrap the tail around your legs to keep it out of harm's way.
