Hmmm does gender play the same role here? I love how embarrassed the scientist gets over this. (studying it and talking about it are vastly different things)
Second cell suggestion for rewording: "The trouble is we haven't made any progress in two weeks."
His reaction is natural enough, for a geek/high-end whatever-he-does. Probably not super comfortable with the ladies even of his own species.
I would image the role of the sexes were at least at the beginning of their evolutionary emergence quite similar. Someone needs to watch the kids, and someone needs to hunt/gather. That probably broke down on strength and aptitude in aggregate. Centuries or millennia of development in a futuristic society could have altered the cultural roles and expectations by fiddling with the fundamental elements that justify the arrangements as they stood.

Raharrs descended from the evolutionary branch that can be described as "apelike cats" by their evolutionary niche. Although initially carnivorous and solitary, they were forced to become omnivorous and form persistent packs during the latest of the rare ice ages of their homeworld, approximately 30 million years ago.

Ditto on the second cell suggestion.

Or in other words... we need more information.
